Mario Toneguzzi: Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) opens 2nd store in CalgaryMountain Equipment Co-op is opening its second store in Calgary on Sept. 1.

The company’s second location will be a 24,000-square-foot store in the southeast Seton community. The retailer, based in Vancouver, sells outdoor recreation gear and clothing.

“We’re excited to expand our product offerings, experiences and community engagement to over 450,000 existing and new MEC members across Calgary,” said Sandy Treagus, chief financial officer of Mountain Equipment Co-op, in a statement. “We’re committed to investing in Calgary South and empowering its growing population to lead active lives by funding local initiatives and creating an inclusive community hub for outdoor adventure. With Seton’s vast green spaces, parks and accessible urban developments, it was a natural choice for our fourth Alberta location.”

The store is part of a 15-year, 365-acre multi-faceted urban development in Seton by Brookfield Residential. Once complete, Seton and its surrounding neighbourhoods are expected to house 120,000 people.

“The new Calgary South store will complement MEC’s existing downtown location and will be joined by a Calgary West store in the Trinity Hills development in late 2019,” said the company.

The Seton store will carry more than 700 brands and be a community hub with classes, clinics, meet-ups and workshops. An open-concept bike shop, unique to this location, will provide full-service maintenance, repairs and fittings.

Over the past 10 years, MEC said it has supported more than 300 projects in the Calgary area to make getting active outside just a little bit easier. It has contributed over $900,000 to organizations such as CPAWS Southern Alberta, the Spin Sisters Mountain Bike Club and the Friends of Fish Creek.

MEC was established in 1971 and is Canada’s largest consumer co-operative with more than five million members across the country.

A grand opening event for the Seton store is planned for Sept. 8.
